Nuclear Grouts & Specialist Applications for Nuclear Facilities

Nuclear grouts are specialist materials designed for use in conjunction with radiation shielding concretes in nuclear environments and facilities, delivered as part of Trent’s specialist concrete delivery for nuclear facilities. Unlike ordinary grouts, nuclear grouts incorporate heavy aggregates to provide radiation shielding, sealing and anchoring functions in hazardous environments. These include high-density and boron-loaded grouts used for radiation shielding, neutron absorption and waste encapsulation across nuclear facilities.

How It Works

Nuclear grouts are engineered to provide radiation shielding, sealing and structural stability in locations where conventional concrete placement is impractical.

High-density grouts incorporate heavy aggregates, such as those used in radiation shielding concrete, including barite or magnetite. This provides them with the mass required to absorb gamma radiation in areas where large concrete pours are impractical.

Likewise, boron-loaded grouts are designed explicitly for neutron absorption, with boron compounds dispersed throughout the mix to reduce radiation exposure.

Critically, these grouts are designed for low permeability, ensuring that contaminants cannot compromise the material through microcracks or voids, while also maintaining long-term stability. They can be applied in several ways, including pouring, dry-packing and pumping, allowing them to penetrate tight spaces and provide uniform sealing or stabilisation in complex nuclear structures.

Where Is It Used in Nuclear Facilities?

Nuclear grouts are used across nuclear facilities where sealing, anchoring or encapsulation must be achieved under radiation, contamination and access constraints.

Typical applications include:

  • Sealing joints, cracks and voids in radiation shielding structures
  • Anchoring and securing reactor components, equipment and shielding blocks
  • Waste encapsulation for radioactive materials, contaminated soils and debris
  • Filling voids during decommissioning of reactors, pipelines and storage facilities
